Vodafone è l'azienda più responsabile fra le 100 più grandi società del mondo secondo la classifica del prestigioso mensile internazionale Fortune. La classifica e' stata redatta in collaborazione con tre istituti di ricerca e consulenza internazionali (AccountAbility, CSRnetwork e Asset4) e ogni anno individua le cento migliori aziende per impegno nel perseguire obiettivi sociali e ambientali. L'indice elaborato per Fortune tiene conto del livello di integrazione delle pratiche responsabili nelle operazioni di business delle aziende, del loro impatto sulle economie, sulle comunità e l'ambiente nei quali operano.
Vodafone, spiega Fortune, ha raggiunto il punteggio di 77.7 su 100 passando dal quinto posto dello scorso anno al primo. L'azienda di telecomunicazioni e' stata premiata per il proprio impegno nella riduzione delle emissioni, l'obiettivo e' di dimezzarle al 2020 migliorando l'efficienza delle proprie reti, per le attivita' nel campo della raccolta e riciclo dei terminali usati e degli apparati di rete, per la riduzione degli infortuni sul lavoro fissata al 10 per ceto nel 2011. Secondo gli analisti l'azienda ha anche strutturato un processo trasparente di comunicazione e dialogo con i propri stakeholder.
In Italia Vodafone ha pubblicato questa settimana il Bilancio di Responsabilità. Quest'anno il processo di verifica del documento e' stato affidato non alle tradizionali società di revisione, ma ad un comitato di esperti nazionali che ha fornito un importante contributo qualitativo e operativo.Il documento e' disponibile unicamente on line sul sito www.myfuture.vodafone.it .

The British cell-phone provider reclaimed the top spot in 2008 (it ranked No. 5 last year and No. 1 in 2006) by upping its green game. Vodafone in April said it would chop its carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2020; the company plans to do so largely by improving the energy efficiency of its global mobile-phone networks. Vodafone also gets good grades for reporting the details of the campaign - and whether or not it's going well - on a continuous basis.
Such transparency apparently is part of the Vodafone culture: The firm reports its progress on past commitments, but also discloses deadlines for future promises, such as its pledge to recycle 95% of network equipment waste (March 2009) and plans to reduce work-related accidents that cause lost time by 10% (March 2011).
Vodafone engages stakeholders on issues related to global competitiveness, and asks for their input in creating new products. Consequently, the business is a leading innovator of socially responsible products: Recent offerings include text-to-speech software for blind people and easy-to-use handsets for the elderly.

The Accountability Rating measures the extent to which companies have built practices into the way they do business and how well they manage their impact. It was first developed in 2004 by AccountAbility, a global nonprofit think tank, and Csrnetwork, an international corporate responsibility consultancy. Asset4, a Swiss data provider, works with these founding partners on the analysis of the final list. Companies earn a score in each of four categories, for a maximum of 100. The categories are:
- Strategic intent. Has the business strategy been designed with consideration of relevant social and environmental trends and impacts?
- Governance and management systems. Do senior executives and the advisory board consider stakeholder issues when setting strategy and formulating corporate policy?
- Engagement. Does the company engage in dialogue with people who have an interest in, may be affected by, or may affect its business?
- Operational performance. Is the company managing its most important social and environmental impacts?
The Accountability Rating examines the 100 largest companies in the Fortune Global 500. A team of analysts reviews all available information from these companies, including their annual reports, social and environmental reports, and websites (the cutoff date is July 15, 2008). The rating process uses a proprietary framework to ask 30 sector-specific and 145 generic questions about each company, supplemented by five overarching questions that relate the company's performance to its wider industry context.
AccountAbility, Csrnetwork, and Asset4 have clients, partners, and members among the companies surveyed. However, none of these relationships, nor any inducements, are taken into consideration during the rating process.
