Work on the Pandasia project at Ouwehands Zoo has begun. This enclosure for giant pandas is part of a larger Asian habitat, which will provide accommodation for a number of Asian species. The whole area covers around 9,000 m², of which 3,400 m² is reserved for the giant panda enclosure. The building consists of two parts: a separate indoor area and outdoor area for the male and female pandas.

Within the project, Ouwehands Zoo will be realising a number of places for pandas to sleep, a nursery, a cold room for storing bamboo and a veterinary clinic. In addition, a restaurant with a Chinese-Asian ambience, and a panda shop will be constructed.
The Pandasia project is being built in a traditional Chinese style. To make it
authentic, the design includes various Chinese elements, ornaments and accessories. Pandasia consists of two structural parts connected to each other by a wooden bridge. The roof and wall structures are being made in China using traditional methods, and will be finished in authentic colours. The walls will feature round elements with Chinese depictions. The roof will be covered with traditional tiles, handmade in China. The shape, structure, proportions, materials and colours of the buildings are all based on a Chinese temple. The project even includes a pagoda, which will feature carefully-applied Chinese detailing, colours, materials and symbols. The project will be realised by two contractors: Ouwehands Zoo has opted to employ Dutch construction company Wessels Rijssen bv, and, to give Pandasia its Chinese character, the zoo is also collaborating with a Chinese construction company.
The following phases
The enclosure will be inspected by the Chinese authorities upon completion. As soon as they issue their approval, the zoo can initiate the transport of the giant pandas and we expect to be able to receive them at Ouwehands Zoo in the autumn of 2016. The exact date is as yet unknown.
